Enhance your stay at cozy Carmel Cottage & Loft near Jay Peak with our stand-by, 50% off offer. Enjoy access to our recreation room and play on our professional table or other games like darts. All guests have access to Charlie's Place, our recreation room on-campus at the Cunningham house. Take advantage of our outdoor Finnish sauna for a true, natural experience!
We don’t like any down-time. Our desire is to be booked all the time. Your desire is to pay less whenever you can. If you can be very flexible, being on our Stand-by List might be up your alley. Here’s how it works:
When we see some down-time in the near future, we notify all stand-bys, offering them 50% off the rent if they can manage those dates in such short notice. By “short notice,” I am talking about one to 7 days. Even if you don’t have a very flexible schedule, this still might work for you at least occasionally. If so, instead of paying, for example, $440 rent for 3 nights at Carmel Cottage, you could pay only $220* (up to 5 persons). The deal could be so good especially when ski conditions are excellent, that you might find it worth your while to make this work for you despite your otherwise “firm” schedule.
All you have to do is contact us, telling us you’d like to be added to our Stand-by List. The next time we foresee down-time either at the Cottage or the Loft, you will get an email from us notifying you. Then it’s the “first come, first served” deal as usual.
*Of course, the deal is half rent. You’d still pay the usual 9% VT Rooms tax, $50 cleaning fee and fully refundable $200 security deposit (returned within 7 days of departure).

We Have increased the on-campus après-ski opportunities by adding a new Recreation Room (RecRoom). It is located in the Cunningham’s house on the first level, across from the sauna. Its main feature is a professional billiards table with all the accoutrements, and other games like darts. It has a small fridge for your beverages and an ice bucket can be supplied on request. Being near the wood stove that heats the whole house, it is just as cozy as the Cottage. Any guest may use this facility free, whether renting the Cottage or the Loft. RecRoom policies:
Alcoholic beverages: Legal age only. Imbibe responsibly.
Smoking: Only on porch or elsewhere outside, and butts in receptacle provided. Absolutely nothing on the pool table itself, even if covered: no drinks or food. Use side tables for these. Hours: The Rec. Room is open daily from 9:00 A.M. till at least 11:00 P.M.
If you wish to use the sauna, let us know 24 hours in advance and we will fire it up for you.
Please do not ask unless you are serious, as it is work—not just flicking a switch.
Procedure: Undress at the Cottage, don boots and a robe (optional) and walk over to the sauna. Inside, you can leave robe & boots under lowest bench where it will not get too hot. Please leave metal jewelry, etc. in the cottage. If “going Scandinavian” (i.e. nude), sit on your towel on sauna bench—same goes for Cottage furniture. We provide flashlights for your use as there are no lights in the sauna. If you need ventilation to breathe better, open vent at rear. If that is not enough, or to cool sauna down, simply prop door open. After a goodly sweat, exit sauna to roll in the snow or dowse off outside with buckets. You can fill up at the spigot on the house (from sauna, face house and look below leftmost window). If not winter, you can also descend to the brook and splash off there. Then return for another sweat. We recommend that you do this three times and then return to the Cottage near the wood stove for a favorite beverage and quiet or good music. N.B. When you leave sauna, prop door open a few inches with a piece of cordwood so temperature will not increase too much and be sure to empty buckets so water will not freeze and ruin them.
